Green Blanket’s Boomer Talks Upcoming Album ‘Who am I talking to?’, Being a Cog, Vomiting to the Gig

Green Blanket are a noise rock band from Victoria, Australia who’ve received coverage in Beat Magazine. Looking to release their sophomore album ‘Who am I talking to?’ this year, we asked Boomer of Green Blanket about their influences, the band’s recent single “Muscle Memory”, show stories, and more.

COUNTERZINE: How are you today?

Boomer: Not too shabby. Thanks for asking!

CZ: Tell us a little about yourselves.

Boomer: Well, there are four members in our Soda group – we go by Boomer (myself), Ming (guitar/vocals), Tanners (bass/obscuring noise) and Toddy (drums). I have know everyone for at least ten years. The rest of the band grew up together in what once was a sleepy surf town. We have been making said noise for approx four years now.

CZ: Who would you consider some of your foremost influences, musical or otherwise?

Boomer: I can’t speak for everyone but for the most part we enjoy a vast variety of toonage! Bowie is magical and there is nothing else to say. Otherwise, I love The Cramps, Motörhead, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Kate Bush, Edith Piaf, The Drones, Nancy and Lee, Frank Zappa, Frida Kahlo, Jean Michael Basquait, and my dogs.

CZ: A few months ago, you released your most recent single “Muscle Memory”. What can you tell us about it?

Boomer: Have you ever felt like a cog? A cog in a machine? If the answer is yes, you can understand the song.

CZ: “Muscle Memory” is from your upcoming sophomore album Who am I talking to? What are some of the themes and ideas, both musically and lyrically, that you’re looking to explore with this record?

Boomer: There is a bit of doom and gloom. However, there is plenty of cynicism and humour thrown in there for those that want to look for it.

CZ: Now that you have your debut in Raw Dingo under your belt, how is the approach toward this record different from that one, if at all?

Boomer: Hopefully we have grown as a band and managed to do some metamorphosis along the way. This album actually started off as a demos and then we thought hey that sounds okay so we kept going. The band as a whole were way more involved which may come across more cohesive. Probably. Hopefully!

CZ: Who am I talking to? is an early 2020 release, and technically it is early 2020. Any updates on a release date?

Boomer: [laughs] It is 2020 now, we better get our shit sorted! Actually, as we speak it is currently getting mastered. So I’d say no later than March, depending on vinyl pressing.

CZ: Any shows coming up?

Boomer: We have a benefit fire relief fundraiser coming up. We don’t have a date yet as the organizers are still going through logistics. We are looking forward to it though! Anyway we can put our two cents forth to helping all the devastation across Australia- the music/arts community has done an incredible job fundraising.

CZ: What are some of your favorite acts you’ve played with?

Boomer: There are so many, I think every band we have ever played with has been awesome! Just the fact they have been there along for the ride! Some of our favourites have been De Porsal, Warped, The Routines, Magic Dirt, Ute Root, Pin, Persecussion Blues, Jelly Mammoth, Golden Age, Ibis, Strange Unit, and High as Hell.

CZ: Any particularly crazy or interesting show stories?

Boomer: Jarryd (Tanners) threw his bass into the back of my leg. Some say deliberately. I went down. The bruise was real! I also vomited all the way to a gig once and somehow managed to get up on stage and play, it must’ve sounded ratshit.

CZ: Any plans to tour in the near future?

Boomer: Yes! This year we will do an album tour. We had no idea the first time so hopefully we can wangle something together for this one. Also would love to go play overseas. There has been discussion of Japan. Japan! Hit us up! [laughs]

CZ: If there was just one thing you wanted everyone to know about Green Blanket that hasn’t been covered, what would it be?

Boomer: Whatever you think the meaning behind Green Blanket is, you are most likely incorrect, my friend.

Many Thanks, Kara Boomer Cake
